Reasons why the teaching and learning of Science subject should use ICT
November 17, 2008
The word ‘SCIENCE’ is taken from Latin word which mean ‘Knowledge’ or ‘to Know’.
Therefore, it is very important to make the teaching and learning of Science subject interesting, especially to children.
That’s why ICT should be applied to science teaching and learning as it can help to motivate and engage children (students) to study Science subject.
Below are the reason why we should include the use of ICT in teaching and learning Science:
· It helps to make teaching and learning visible.
· It helps to make teaching and learning more interesting.
· Teacher then can act as facilitator, where students become more active in the lesson and have fun in learning.
· It helps to develop students’ imagination and the ability to reason scientifically.
Science Education in 21st Century

As taken from http://www.ed.gov/rschstat/research/progs/mathscience/wieman04/index.html
Science education is seen to have more important purpose than from what it has in the past.
The main aims for the change:
-
To provide students with the useful experiences in their process of learning.
-
To provide them with knowledge and the science process skills.
-
To make students appreciate the importance and conserving the environment.
There are 3 types of Science Process Skills, which are:
- Basic skills – analysing, classifying, communicating, comparing, observing, recording etc.
- Integrated skills – such as investigation and creative problem solving skill.
- Investigative skills – making hypothesis, experiments, solve and reflect.

Here is an example of questionnaire
whatithinkaboutscience that I have taken from
http://www.teachingideas.co.uk/science/contents.htm
The questionnaire is very useful in order for teachers to find out about their students’ opinions of Science subject.
Here is an interesting game, it is about Snake & Ladder:
*The questions are not provided, teachers have to write down their own question (depending on the topic for that day).
